ACMA regulates human exposure to electromagnetic energy (EME) emitted by radiocommunications transmitters. Portable transmitters with integral antennas, such as mobile telephones and hand-held two-way radios, are regulated at point of supply. Responsibility for compliance rests with the manufacturer or importer. Other transmitters, such as mobile telephone base stations and television broadcast towers, are regulated through licence conditions. Responsibility for compliance rests with the licensee.
A number of other terms used interchangeably with EME include EMR (electromagnetic radiation) and EMF (electromagnetic fields). EME on this website refers to the radiofrequency portion of the electromagnetic spectrum.
